If you are involved in an accident that is caused by another driver, you are entitled
to a reasonable rental car. Most of the time, insurance companies will reimburse you
but not pay up front for the rental car. Sometimes they will let the rental car company bill them instead of you, though, you can never count on that.
But to be safe, you should carry rental coverage on your own policy as well as liability,
collision, uninsured and underinsured motorist and it doesn't hurt to also have
medical payments coverage. To protect your family your limits of coverage for liability
and uninsured motorist/underinsured motorist should be $500,000.00 or at least $300,000.00. There are many uninsured and underinsured drivers in California, especially in Los Angeles, so be safe and carry high enough coverage to protect you and your family. It doesn't cost that much more in premiums and if you are involved in a serious accident you will be grateful that you have decent coverage.
